De adembenemende Azoren: een paradijs voor natuurliefhebbers

Imagine a remote archipelago stretching out in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by azure waters and dotted with lush green islands. Waterfalls cascading into dense forests, pristine crater lakes, and a vibrant floral display. No, we’re not in Hawaii, but on vacation in the Azores. This Portuguese archipelago captivates with its unspoiled nature, breathtaking scenery, and welcoming culture.

The Azores consist of nine islands scattered in the Atlantic Ocean, roughly halfway between Europe and North America. Each island has its own unique character, ranging from the rugged landscape of São Miguel to the historic charm of Terceira, picturesque Faial with its unique marina, and mountainous Pico with its namesake volcano.

Island hopping in the Azores or one island: you choose

Because the Azores islands are relatively small, it’s perfectly possible to visit several in a single trip. This way, you’ll fully experience the archipelago’s incredibly diverse character and sample the wide range of activities available: from hiking and cycling to diving, windsurfing, kayaking, and canyoning.

Island hopping is nice, but certainly not a must. Staying on São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores, where the main airport is also located, is also highly recommended – especially if you’re traveling with children. Whale watching, exploring the island on an exciting jeep safari, visiting a pineapple plantation, hiking among the geysers and hot springs, or completing a trek to one of the many crater lakes: the Azores are a truly top destination for active families.

Tasting the local gastronomy

Besides the natural beauty, a holiday in the Azores offers a rich culture and hospitality you won’t soon forget. Try local dishes like Cozido das Furnas , a stew cooked in the ground using volcanic steam. Enjoy fresh seafood in picturesque fishing villages, top wines, and some of the world’s finest cheeses.

The friendly locals are more than happy to let you sample all the delicacies their little slice of paradise has to offer. So don’t be surprised if you’re served a fully homemade breakfast at your quinta in the morning, made with fresh ingredients from their own garden. That’s what a holiday tastes like!

The ideal summer destination – but be on time

The Azores enjoy a mild climate, but for the most ideal weather conditions and to experience the full splendor of nature, we recommend visiting between May and the end of September. During these months, temperatures are pleasant and the chance of precipitation is lowest.

Just because the Azores aren’t yet overly touristy, the selection of accommodations and rental cars isn’t endless. So booking early is key. Planning your trip in the fall for the upcoming summer? It’s definitely a no-brainer if you’re planning a trip to the Azores. And that means plenty of extra time to look forward to that wonderful trip that awaits you!
